Patient FAQ

What is chronic pain?

Pain is usually called chronic when it lasts more than 3 months. It is common: about 1 in 5 people in Canada live with it.

What is a chronic pain clinic?

A hospital-based service, such as the Chronic Pain Clinic at Saint John Regional Hospital, where clinicians assess long-lasting pain and help plan its management. Care often combines several approaches, such as education, physical activity and rehabilitation, psychological strategies, medications and, for some people, procedures.

How do I get an appointment?

Patients are seen through the hospital’s Chronic Pain Clinic (Pain Management Services), usually after a referral from a physician or other authorized clinician. Talk to your family doctor or nurse practitioner first.
